William "Timbuck" Matson Obituary

William “Timbuck” Matson, 76, passed away peacefully at Portage Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Tim was born on July 13, 1949 to the late Gladys and Wilfred Matson.

Tim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1974.  He was a member of the American Legion Rheault Cavis Moilanen Post 291.  He worked in various capacities during his lifetime, including work in mining and roofing.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen (Kathy) Monette on July 9, 1993 and they would have been celebrating their 33rd anniversary.

When granddaughters come to visit, Tim could be found introducing them to Trenary Toast, root beer, potato sausage, and chicken wings.  It was never a surprise to see him sneaking extra goodies into the pockets of his “girls.”

In addition to his granddaughters, his other love was animals.  All the neighborhood pets knew Timbuck, because he was the source of their treats.  Dogs, songbirds, turkeys, ducks, and whatever other critter showed up, Timbuck loved them all.

Tim had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met, leaving lasting impressions through his generosity, kindness, and welcoming nature.  He was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Tamarack.”  He made everyone he met feel valued and cared for.  He loved to make people laugh, and friendship was important to him.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Sandy (Dennis) Barrette and Betty Codere, brothers-James and Wilfred, and brother in law-“Uncle Louie” Chandonais.

He is survived by his wife Kathy, his son James (Holly), and was “gramps” to his two cherished granddaughters Madalynn and Abagail.  He is also survived by his sisters Evelyn (Cy) Laurent, Carol Chandonais, Dorothy Holzberger, Louise (Bob) Parolini, Lucy Matson, and Donna (Mike) Fountaine, and John (Karen) and Paul.

At Timbuck’s request, there will be no public visitation.  He didn’t want people to mourn, but wanted people to celebrate his life. To honor that wish, a celebration of life is being planned for Saturday, July 25th, at the Lake Linden Village Park, from 1:00 until 5:00 PM.

The family would like to thank Portage Hospital for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

The Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden is assisting the family.
