Lake Linden: William “Bill” Mikko, Sr., 85, of Lake Linden passed away on November 9, 2014, at Portage Health in Hancock after a short illness.
He was born on August 21, 1929, a son of Gust and Laura (Whitford) Mikko. He played football for Calumet High School. In 1948, he graduated from Calumet High School as the valedictorian. He worked at Niemela’s Grocery and then for 42 years at the Quality Super Valu, retiring as manager.
He was married to Gloria (Clouthier) on June 7, 1952. She passed away on June 29, 2005.
Bill was a past president of the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsman’s Club and a past member of the Calumet Golf Club. He loved deer hunting and fishing and was a member of the Mosquito Lake Culture Club at Lake Medora. He also stayed at Mack Frimodig’s camp for a number of years. He loved playing cards when his kids were all home. He also enjoyed bowling and participated in bowling leagues.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife, a brother-Kenneth Mikko, and a great-granddaughter-Amarah.
Bill is survived by: 2 daughters-Penny (Jerry) Pini of Lake Linden and Wendy Wood of Lake Linden; 3 sons-Bill (Judy) Mikko of Laurium, Robert (Geneva) Mikko of San Jose, CA, and Donald (Chay) Mikko of Atlanta, GA; 10 grandchildren-Dennis, Krystal, Danny, Michael, Caroline, Amber, April, Autumn, Abbie, Hayley; 14 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way; beloved cat-Amy; grand dog-Molly and grand cats-Buddy, Flash, and Princess; 2 sisters- Florence Clouthier of Lake Linden and Janet Buschell of Houghton; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for their compassionate care along with the staff at Portage Health.
At Bill’s request, there will be no public services. Private graveside services will be held at the Mount Calvary Cemetery with the Pearce Funeral Home of Lake Linden in charge of arrangements.
