Lake Linden: T/SGT (R) F. John Hoffman, 91, of Lake Linden passed away with his family by his side at The Marquette County Medical Care Facility on October 16, 2014.

He was born March 23, 1923 in Calumet, a son of Mathias and Dorothy (Mehrens) Hoffman.  He attended the Sacred Heart School in Calumet before entering the Navy during World War II.  After the war, he returned to the area to finish his schooling. Then, he joined the Army Air Corp. which later split, becoming the US Air Force.  With 21 years of service, he also participated in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, retiring in 1966.  He returned to Lake Linden and worked for C&H Mining, the White Pine Mine for more than 10 years as an underground mechanic, the Painesdale Shop, The Wisti Law office, and lastly, Community Action Agency.  
 

On April 24, 1951, he was married to Doris M. Allwin at the St. Joseph Chapel.  She passed away on November 2, 2010.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post 90 of Lake Linden, and the Air Force Sergeant’s Association.  He was an avid Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes Football fan, and a hockey fan.  He followed the Red Wings, the Lions, and the Tigers.  He “coffee clutched at Lindell’s and Candy’s and he loved to tease Packer Fans and give them a hard time.  He was able to take the Honor Flight, mission 4, to Washington DC in 2013.

His family appreciated the kindness and the care from the staff at Aspirus Keweenaw and Tammy Grobar, Angie Eagling, and the staff of the 100 wing of the Marquette County Medical Care Facility. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, a son-Mathias Joseph, brothers-Matt killed in Normandy during World War II, Phil Hoffmann, and Ed Hoffman; and sisters-Dorothy Faller, Margaret “Peggy” Isola, and Catherine Hoffman.


He is survived by: 4 sons- Gary Hoffman of Marquette, Clarence (Joan) Hoffman of Bootjack, Allan (Alyce) Hoffman of Lake Linden, and Master Sgt James (Gina) Hoffman of Gwinn; 13 grandchildren- Juliet, Steven, Valerie, Jonathan, Jodi, Cory, Marc, Bryan, Justin, Andrew, Megan, Jason Wade, and Madalyn; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-Mary (Bob) Eaton of Milwaukee; sister-in-law-Frances Hoffmann of Illinois; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate. The visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with a parish prayer service at 7:30.

Burial with military honors will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
