Lake Linden: Joyce E. Messner, 84, resident of Rustic Meadows in Lake Linden, passed away after a year and a half illness, at the home of her daughter in Bootjack, on May 8, 2016.
She was born on August 31, 1931, in Hancock, a daughter of David and Evelyn (Luke) Ploof. She was a graduate of Hancock High School in 1950.
Joyce worked at Fashion City in Houghton, Dwyer’s Shoe Store in Houghton, H and L Services in Houghton, and from 1976 until October of 2015 at Dr. James Sarazin’s office in Hancock.
She was married to Robert Messner in Hubbell on July 8, 1950. Robert passed away on December 1, 2007.
She was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Lake Linden and the United Methodist Women. She volunteered for the Keweenaw Spay Neuter Assistance Group.
Joyce was always willing to help family and friends in any way possible. She spent countless hours working as a volunteer for KSNAG and was very active in the Lake Linden Methodist Church. She enjoyed her time spent with friends in the Torch Lake Senior Card Club. She continued to enjoy working at Sarazin Dental several days a week until October, 2015, and she will be missed by the patients and staff.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, 3 brothers-Raymond, George, and Albert Ploof, and 3 sisters-Vivian (Raymond) Frazer, Mary Lou (Chet) O’Locki, and Sheila (Burt) Alm.
She is survived by: 3 daughters-Linda (James) Sarazin of Bootjack, Dawn (Lee) VerBerkmoes of Bootjack, Jill (Paul) DuMonthier of Lake Linden; grandchildren-Ryan (Sarah) and Tyler (Jillian) Sarazin, Chad (Liss), Kyle (Sarah), and Casey (Lilith) VerBerkmoes, Jenny (Greg) Kallio, Renee and Ross DuMonthier; 8 great-grandchildren-Emmitt, Annette, and Ava Sarazin, Caleb, Lilly, Analise and Sailor; sister-Barbara (Clay) Kempen; sister-in-law-Julie Ploof, brother-in-law-Ron (Anita) Messner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Lake Linden United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert White to officiate. Visitation will be from 3:00 until the start of the service at the church. Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Lake Linden.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to KSNAG, The Lake Linden United Methodist Church, or a charity of one’s choice may be considered.
