Lake Linden: Carl N. “Gus” Kiilunen, 87, of Lake Linden passed away on August 20, 2014, at Our Lady of Mercy in Hubbell.
He was born in Copper City on February 16, 1927, a son of Nestor and Helmi (Taivalkoski) Kiilunen. He attended Copper City and Lake Linden Schools. He moved to Traprock (Sievi) in 1938. In his youth, he worked on the farm and learned the welding and repair trades from his father. He found work as a logger and commercial fisherman and served in the Army during World War II. Carl and his wife Eleanor owned and operated Kiilunen Repair Works in Lake Linden for 50 years.
Carl was married to Eleanor (DeMarois) in Calumet in 1946, she passed away in June of 2006. They had 60 years of marriage together and hunted, fished, snowmobiled, and went to Isle Royale on boat trips in the summers.
Carl was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbell. He was also a member of American Legion Post 90, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsman’s Assn, and the NRA.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, sisters-Agnes (Paul) Siira and Norma (Tor) Holmboe, and a brother Lawrence Kiilunen.
He is survived by: a son- Bill (Heather) Kiilunen; a grandson-Mark Kiilunen; a granddaughter-Jodi Kiilunen; great-grandchildren-Kayla and James; sisters Dorothy of California and Jean of Traprock; and a sister-in-law-Sandy Kiilunen.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with Rev. Robert Paul to officiate. The visitation will be on Friday, August 22, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
