Henry VerBerkmoes, Jr. Obituary

Lake Linden: Henry VerBerkmoes, Jr., 87, a resident of Lake Linden, Michigan, passed away January 15, 2019, at The Lighthouse of Hancock.

Henry was born June 1, 1931 to Henry Sr. and Grace VerBerkmoes in Grand Haven, Michigan.  Henry's wife of 63 years, Vickie, preceded him in death on October 5, 2014. Also preceding him in death were his siblings Anna, Casey, Donald, Edwin, Harold and Evelyn.

Henry served in the United States Air Force from 1949-1953.  While serving, he enjoyed playing trombone in a jazz band with well-known composer, John Williams.  After serving his country, he received his Bachelor of Music Education from Central Michigan University.  Henry then worked as an Assistant Band Director for the Charlotte, MI School District, as the Jr. And Sr. High School Band Director in Whittemore-Prescott, MI, and Roscommon, MI.  While in Roscommon, his bands were awarded top state honors consistently and traveled to perform at the New York Worlds Fair.

Henry obtained his Masters Degree in School Administration and in 1966 became Principal of Roscommon High School.   In 1972, Henry and his family moved to Lake Linden, MI.  “Mr. V” served as High School Principal until 1985, when he then became Superintendent until his retirement in 1991.  He enjoyed his retirement for many years fishing, gardening, consulting for numerous school districts, and traveling with his wife visiting children and grandchildren.            Henry is survived by his sister, Charlotte, his children Leland(Dawn), Lelie Holmes(Jim), Nannette Vaughn, Lisa Sell(Dave), and Stephanie Madden(Joe). He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Henry will be remembered for his dedication to education, which was evident in his successful career.  Although he was guided by his commitment to education, he always carried with him his love of music.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Lighthouse of Hancock and Aspirus Keweenaw Hospice for their compassionate care.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
